Prophecies are made by prophets
and prophets are made by prophecies in the mouth of a mighty God. Prophesy is a
declaration or proclamation of an event which has already taken place in
history or what can still take place or will take place in future. This is the
prophecy which Jacob gave concerning Judah;
“Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall
praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children
shall bow down before thee” Genesis 49:8.
Although Jacob was speaking prophetically
concerning Judah, unknown to him, he connected spiritually to a previous
prophecy made by Judah’s mother, Leah in Genesis 29:35
“And she conceived again, and bare a son: and
she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and
left bearing” Genesis 29:35.
The significant of the name, Judah
which denotes praise was already revealed in the prophetic history of this
tribe. As at the time when the prophecy was first given, it was a mystery to
Leah. She did not grasp what she was saying because she said it out of great
excitement. Even as at the time Jacob made the prophetic blessing, it did not
happen immediately but was fulfilled ten generations later in the life of David
from the tribe of Judah who became the king of Israel.
“Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall
praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children
shall bow down before thee. Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art
gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall
rouse him up? The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver
from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of
the people be” Genesis 49:8-10.
The lion, king of the forest is a
fitting symbol of this tribe from which David came from, and the son of David,
Shiloh, the true “Lion of the Tribe of
Judah” (JESUS) to whom all power in heaven, on earth and under the earth
hath been given.
And Jacob said, “Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall
praise”. Here, Jacob was not referring to the person of Judah, but in the
spirit of prophecy, he was talking about the coming of Shiloh and that everyone
will bow to him.
